Traverse of the Bauges - Snowshoes / Raquettes
The
Bauges are situated between the lac du Bourget and lac d'Annecy. To
the south and west the Bauges are surrouned by dramatic limestone cliffs.
The alpine pastures (alpages) are overlooked by l'Arcalod (2217
m), the highest mountain in the Bauges.
The Bauges are classified a Regional Natural Park which has helps to preserve the unspoilt countryside with its many traditional activities and a superb flora and fauna.
Cows and goats are a part of the landscape in the alpine pastures descending to lower fields and meadows during the winter. The Bauges is rightly proud of its well-known cheese, the "Tome des Bauges" with A.O.C. (Appellation d'Origine Controlee) status produced either directly at the farm or in one of the "fruitiere" or dairies in the Bauges.
The south facing slopes of the Bauges are home to vines that thrive on the sunny slopes.
Our Traverse of the Bauges explores this remarkable area starting in the south-west on the high plateau near La Feclaz and ending at the town of Annecy on the shores of Lac d'Annecy, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes. We cross the undulating snow covered ground; pass through forests with snow draped over the boughs of the trees. The dramatic mass of Mont Blanc in the distance standing out in an azur blue sky. The countryside under its winter coat reveals its secrets with wildlife including: wild boar (sanglier), chamois, and the evidence of their passage through their tracks in the snow.
The final day sees us following the broad crest of the Semnoz overlooking Lac d'Annecy as we slowly descend to finally join the shores of the lake and the town of Annecy with its beautiful old quarter.
