Winter Walking in the Beaufortain - Snowshoes / Raquettes

The Beaufortain mountains are very close to Mont Blanc and as a result have a higher than average snowfall in the winter.

The village of Beaufort is the base for this weeks winter walking holiday. We will use snowshoes to access the peaks.

The village is a real, authentic, Savoyard village without the trappings of the resorts. Small, cosy bars. Beaufort is about 30 mins from Albertville and reached by a road that winds along the river Duron. In summer it is possible to continue over the Cormet de Roselend and drop down past Chapieux to Bourg St Maurice in the Tarentaise valley. In winter this route is blocked with snow and will not open again until the spring.

Two small ski resorts are located in the Beaufortain, Les Saisies and Areches, both small "family" type resorts popular with the French. We will use some of the chairlifts at Areches to gain altitude before quitting the ski area to head on to the mountains proper.

Overnight in Refuge.

Basic skills day; snow shelter / igloo?; avalanche awareness.
