Tour of the Chartreuse

Tour of the Chartreuse

The Chartreuse are possibly most famous for the monastery and the monks who traditionally made the spirit of the same name. The monastry is in the village of St Pierre de Chartreuse. The Chartreuse area extends between Chambery in the north and Grenoble in the south. They are predominantly limestone area with gorges, and large escarpments and cliffs of up to 400m. The high plateau, almost invisible from below, are home in summer months to the shepherds looking after flocks of sheep, goats and cattle. The range reaches to over 2000m in altitude. The area has no major routes through it and the villages are a haven of peace with small streams and rivers tumbling through wooded valleys.
