Fluent in French and a resident of the Albertville region since 2005, I share my life with my French partner from Savoie, offering me a deep understanding of French culture and traditions.
When I’m not guiding or teaching, I enjoy skiing in all its forms—ski mountaineering, cross-country (ski de fond), and alpine skiing. Beyond the mountains, my passions include reading, photography, and staying informed on global affairs.

Mark’s Story: A Life Shaped by the Mountains
Beginnings in the Outdoors
My journey with the mountains began in the 1970s, climbing and walking alongside my father. These early experiences sparked a lifelong passion that shaped my career and personal life.
After specializing in Outdoor Education at Bangor University, where I earned a Bachelor of Education degree, I entered the UK’s outdoor industry, immersing myself in guiding and teaching.
Military Service and Leadership
In 1988, I attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned the following year. Specializing in training and development, I worked closely with the infantry, often incorporating mountaineering into my roles.
Mountain Guiding and International Roles
Post-military, I established a mountain guiding business in Glen Coe, Scotland, which I ran until the 2001 outbreak of Foot & Mouth disease.
This marked the beginning of my international career:
- Kosovo (2001 – 2002): Worked with the Kosovo Protection Corps, providing specialist mountain training, and paragliding over the stunning Lake Ohrid.
- Afghanistan (2003): Supported the UN’s election team as a security and logistics consultant, facilitating voter registration during pivotal elections.
- Sudan (2004 – 2005 and 2006): Served as an international ceasefire monitor in the Nuba Mountains, later acting as a Liaison Officer to the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement. In 2006, I participated in the European Union’s observer mission in Darfur, navigating challenging conditions and extreme heat.
Settling in Savoie
After some years of global adventures, I now call a quiet hamlet near Albertville my permanent home. From this base, I continue to share my love for the mountains with others, offering guided tours that reflect my deep respect for nature and a lifetime of expertise.
